Isle Royale National Park
is a gem among our U.S. national parks due to its isolation
in the middle of Lake Superior, its low visitation, and
its roadless condition. The island is roughly 45 miles
long by 8.5 miles wide at its widest point, and can be
reached only by boat or seaplane. This boreal forest (“spruce/moose”)
ecosystem is home to the longest running ecological study
of wolves and moose in the world. Join us for this moderate
5-night backpacking trip as we explore the eastern/central
portion of the island. Instructors Deb Guernsey and Greg
Wright will share insider knowledge about wolf/prey ecology
as well as the general ecology of the island. Along the
way we´ll talk about the flora and fauna we encounter,
teach about Leave No Trace (LNT) backpacking principles,
and safe travel in the backcountry. We´ll discuss
Isle Royale´s interesting history as related to geology,
human use, and wildlife habitation.
The songbirds will be singing
as they maintain breeding and nesting territories. There's nothing like waking up to the song of the white throated sparrow, winter wren, black throated green warbler, and hermit thrush. We´ll also be treated
to the ubiquitous call of the common loon and will spend time talking about loon research and conservation. If we´re
lucky we may hear wolves howling as we slumber in our tents
at night. We´ll build in plenty of evening downtime
for journaling and/or personal explorations once we reach
our daily destination. Participants must provide their
own backpacks, gear, and food. Group water filters and
backpacking stoves will be provided by Adventure Learning
Ecotours if needed.
We recommend lodging at
the Best Western Franklin Square (906-487-1700) the night
before departure if coming in from out of town. This hotel
is within walking distance to both Michigan Technological
University and the Ranger III boat dock. Complete directions,
gear lists, and other information will be emailed to registered
participants.
